Chobe Under Canvas is a luxury tented camp set up in secluded campsites on the lush banks of the Chobe River. The camp moves to a different site every five or six days, in keeping with the park regulations, whilst maintaining the high levels of comfort and service experienced at most Botswana camps.
The camp has five spacious ensuite safari tents which are furnished with double or twin beds, crisp bed linens, bedside tables, lamps and a canvas wardrobe. The ensuite bathroom sits behind a canvas doorway which is set up with a flush toilet, tin basin, water jug and bucket shower. At the front of each tent is a small shaded veranda with directors chairs where you can look out over the river.
The main area is an open-sided marque with a long table for dining, a small bar area, reference library and a campfire area. The food and service is always very good which is a credit to the very friendly team of guides and camp staff.
Activities at the camp are focused around twice daily game drives where you explore the lush banks of the Chobe River and beyond in an open safari vehicle accompanied by an armed guide and tracker. Game drives are conducted in the early morning and late afternoon/evening to avoid the heat of the day. The tracker will constantly search for any sign of animals, while the guide will share his vast knowledge of Botswana's landscape and wildlife.
There is also a leisurely cruise along the Chobe River at sunset which gives guests the opportunity to spot wildlife coming down to the water to drink. Large herds of elephant drinking and bathing in the river are joined by groups of buffalo, while red lechwe, puku, zebra, sable and roan antelope can be spotted grazing on the floodplains. Prolific birdlife can be encountered along the river’s edge, where carmine bee-eaters build massive colonies in the exposed sandbanks.
